Playing Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park

All the source code you’ll ever need is on the Interenet. I pulled down the C++ code for a great CD player and modified it to suit my needs. Then I downloaded the source for GIF file creation with the intention of having the CD player auto generate a GIF file with my currently playing CD. I figured I’d post the image on a web server and link to it from my Blog.

The code to create a GIF file is protected by a patent which means I have to license the LZW portion from Unisys to get an official copy of the source code.

I don’t really mind software patents in general (people spend a ton of R&D money to develope code, they should be compensated). What ticks me off is that the GIF format was allowed to become a web standard before the patent was inforced. Sorta screwed anyone that wants to put together a quick little app to make GIF files.

The source code I have is from 1990 and it’s a little rough around the edges. There’s a bug that causes problems with black and white images and I can’t seem to track it down. Maybe after a cup of coffee…

In the meantime, is there any way of having Server Side Includes with BlogSpot? I’d use an Iframe, but I think some people have browsers that don’t support them.
